(A) There are many tips to ease nausea, experiment and do what works best for you. Snack frequently – lot of pregnant women keep saltines on hand, 24/7. Drink lots of water. Avoid fatty foods and caffeine. Drink peppermint & ginger tea, lemonade, ginger ale. Suck on hard candies. Accupressure bracelets can be purchased at most drug stores. Ask your healthcare provider about taking Vitamin B6.

(Q) Is it true that pregnant women shouldn’t clean the cat’s litterbox?

(A) Yes. Cat feces can contain the bacteria Toxoplasma gondii, which can cause Taxoplasmosis. It can also be found in soil where cats may defecate, such as a garden.

(Q) Is it safe to clean my house while pregnant?

(A) Yes. Make sure you’re in a well ventilated area to avoid excess fumes. Always wear gloves (even when you’re not pregnant) to avoid any chemicals being absorbed into the bloodstream. Seek out natural based cleaning products to ensure safety.

(Q)How much weight should I gain when pregnant

(A) Weight gain varies. If your pre-pregnancy weight is normal, you should ideally gain 25 – 35 pounds. If you’re under-weight, you should gain 25 – 40 pounds. If you are overweight, you should only gain 15 – 25 pounds.

(Q)Is it safe to travel?

(A) According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the safest time to travel while pregnant is during the second trimester. This is the time she is least likely to experience a miscarriage or premature labor. Traveling is considered safe up until 35 weeks, after that many doctors will not recommend it. If you are traveling by air, check with your airline to make sure they will allow you to fly. Some airlines will not allow women who are 35 weeks and beyond to fly. Metal detectors at the airport will not harm your baby.

(Q)I would like to decorate my baby’s room, is it safe for me to paint?

(A) It is recommended that you let someone else do the painting while pregnant.

(Q)Why am I feeling so tired?

(A)Being pregnant puts a strain on your body. Changing hormonal levels are the main culprit that give you that run-down feeling. Tiredness usually eases with the passing of the first trimester. To help relieve that tired feeling, listen to your body. Go to bed earlier and try to get nine to ten hours of sleep. If you can, take a nap during the day. Eat right.

(Q)What over the counter (OTC) medicines are OK?

(A) ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS seek the advice of your healthcare provider before taking any OTC products.

(Q) Is it normal for me to have headaches?

(A) Yes. It is quite common to suffer frequent headaches while pregnant, especially during the first trimester. Although the exact cause is undetermined, it is believed that hormonal changes are the main cause. Ask your healthcare provider what you can take to relieve your headache.

(Q) Can I use a Q-Tip to remove the wax from my baby’s ears?

(A) No! You should never place a Q-Tip (or anything smaller then your elbow) in baby’s ears, or your ears for that matter! The ear drum can be easily punctured. There is no reason to remove the wax and it will eventually fall out on it’s own.

(Q) How can I ease my baby’s constipation?

(A) – While baby is lying on her back, gently bicycle her legs.

-If your baby is formula fed, ask your healthcare provider about switching formulas.

-Increase fluids. Juices such as prune or apple, may help older babies.

-Ask your healthcare provider about Glycerin Suppositories, or OTC Stool Softners.

-For older babies, cut back on constipating foods such as rice or bananas.

(Q) Help! My newborn has cradle cap!

(A) Rub vegetable or olive oil into baby’s scalp a few times a week – this will help remove the “scales”. After using the oil, wash baby’s hair with a gentle baby shampoo. Massage the shampoo into the scalp for as long as baby can stand it, up to 20 minutes. If the condition worsens, spreads or will not go away – consult your healthcare provider.

(Q)When will I feel the first movement?

(A) First movements are usually felt at about 18 weeks. First time Moms may not know what they are feeling are actually “kicks” from baby. Experienced Moms may feel movement earlier, as they know what they are feeling.

(Q)Is it normal to feel crampy in the beginning of pregnancy?

(A) As your uterus grows, some cramping is quite normal. If you are worried about miscarriage, always contact your healthcare provider. Never feel as if you are “bothering” them with silly questions.

(Q)How many calories do I need?

(A) This question is best put to your healthcare provider who knows your individual situation and health needs, but – in general: During the first trimester, you will not need to take in extra calories. During the second and third trimesters, you should take in 200 to 300 extra calories per day.

(Q)Are there any foods or drinks I should avoid?

(A)Large fish (shark, tuna, sea bass, swordfish) are known to contain high levels of mercury. Raw meats can contain e.coli and toxoplasmosis Raw chicken and eggs can transmit salmonella Soft cheese, such as brie and Pate can contain Listeria Although it is not recommended by the FDA and all healthcare providers, some suggest staying away from shell fish while pregnant as some can contain bacterial, parasitic, and viral infections.

Aspartame – commonly known as NutraSweet is found in many diet drinks. In moderation, it shows no threat to most pregnant women. Some women may have inherited phenylketoniria (PKU), a amino acid that can prove toxic for children. For these women, aspartame should be avoided. Again, it is best to seek the advice of your healthcare provider where aspartame is concerned.

(Q)Is exercise safe during pregnancy?

(A) Again, where exercise is concerned – it is best to follow the advice of your healthcare provider who knows your individual health concerns. In general though, exercise during pregnancy is not only safe, but recommended. Through their extensive research, Drs. James Clapp and Elizabeth Noble found that pregnant women who exercised not only delivered healthy babies, but did so in less time then those women who did not exercise while pregnant.

(Q) Will sex harm the baby?

(A) You can safely have sex throughout your pregnancy, as long as it’s comfortable for you

It’s really the first time she’ll be encountering non-whites, and I certainly don’t want her mixing with them, playing together in the sandpit or in the playpark… I think it will make it harder to teach her that those simians are sub-human if she’s been fooled by her earlier encounters. But there aren’t enough WNs with kids in my area for her to socialize with. How can I get her to mix and play with some good pure white children her age, without having to expose her to all those dirty messy THINGS that the “ethnics” drag around with them? Or will she just have to be a bit lonely for the time being? Your help would really be appreciated
Annie xxx

(A) Unfortunately – this is a very common experience most of us find ourselves facing as our children get older. Most of us don’t have others with our political beliefs living around us. My first suggestion would be to start up your own playgroup – that way you get to pre-approve who gets to join. If you belong to a homeschoolers group – I would start there. If your child has any interests such as dance classes, music lessons, karate – whatever, you could try arranging play dates with some of those parents as well. If there are kids that you see at the park quite often, speak with their parents and see if they’d like to meet up at the park at a set time. Don’t feel bad if you have to call your child aside if an undesirable tries to join in their fun. Explain to your child to be polite – but those people are not their friend.

Question:

I have tiny, red bumps (keratosis pilaris or something like that)…though being out in the sun this summer seems to have helped a lot, what else can I do? A

Answer:

Keratosis pilaris is unsightly but completely harmless. It usually grows worse during the winter months or other times of low humidity when skin dries out, and may worsen during pregnancy or after childbirth. Although it can be left untreated, persistent use of an intensive moisturizer may get you satisfactory improvement. Try a cream like Acid mantle or Complex 15 after bathing, then re-apply several times throughout the day. If this does not help, change to a medicated cream containing urea (Curel, Carmol-20) or alpha-hydroxy acids (Aqua Glycolic, Lacticare) and apply twice daily. You may find them too irritating to use more often.

My best advice is….

The plugged pores can be removed by taking long, hot soaking tub baths and then rubbing the areas with a coarse washcloth, stiff brush, or ‘Buf-Puf’. Put some epsom salt in the tub.

I use a body scrub made of Epson and Sea Salts with olive oil or ANY oil. VERY Light on the oil as it can clog pores even more.

Prescription medicines that may help include antibiotics (Erythromycin, Bactrim) if the spots are very red and Tazorac Cream. Tazorac, a relative of vitamin A, may cause irritation in some people.

AA

(Q) My 2 ½ year old son has been refusing to eat his veggies – should I force him to eat them or just wait out this new phase?

(A) As tough as it may be, he needs those veggies. It’s a sad fact that most kids today don’t get anywhere near their daily nutritional requirements and we have a growing, worldwide obesity problem. Teaching your child to eat right, right from the start will be a lifelong benefit for him. Avoiding the daily battle by giving in and removing the vegetables will do more harm in the long run. He very well may keep that “ew – I don’t like that” mindset throughout his entire life. Keep the veggies on his plate and have him try some, make sure it is clear to him that you expect vegetables to be a part of his meals. Mix it up and try new things with him often. Try to encourage his acceptance by using dips, sauces, salad dressings and most importantly – by setting a good example and eating them yourself. If he’s a fan of Bob the Builder, make sure he knows that Bob got that strong by eating plenty of vegetables! I went through this stage when my oldest was about 2. We stuck to it and now salad, corn and peas are some of his favorite things!

Don’t give up hope even if a couple of days have passed by since escape. She probably has found a good hiding place since they sleep during most of the day. A good trick that may work is to leave her cage open in the room where she escaped. This is so that she can smell her soiled bedding her food and treats that she likes. She will probably be hungry and possibly a little stressed so her own cage may represent a safe hiding place. You may wake up one morning to find her asleep in her cage again. But then this trick does not always work sadly to say.

Dogs love to roll in things like dead animals, manure, and garbage. This is an instinct, which lets them cover up their own scent while hunting for prey. The only way to stop your dog from doing this is to not give him the option. This may be easy as far as the garbage, but not easy if you let walk you’re dog walk off his leash. The best way is to train him effectively and have him listen to your commands and be rewarded for obeying them.

Should the temptation to roll in something smelly be just too much to bother following commands, he can at least learn that if he does this he will not be allowed in the house or to jump up on you. At least this way he isn’t sharing his smell with you!

It probably is. The only disease that dogs and humans can pass back and forth through saliva is beta strep throat, which is rare. And if your son has a weakened immune system, you may want to be careful about exposing him to the normal bacteria that’s present in the saliva of healthy dogs.

Just a reminder since you have a child in the house, is careful your dog doesn’t become infected with worms. These parasites are not passed by saliva, but children can pick them up by playing on the ground or the floor.
